freelance technical writer
How does a new freelance technical writer find employment?

I’ve heard that new freelance technical writers start off by writing for magazines. Is this correct? If so what else do you know about this? What do you know about other ways to start off?
They’re not published, but I have written a couple of documents having somewhat of a technical style. I do not know if they’re of high enough quality to do so. I may try Associated Content.

Well, which pizza restaurant would you like to deliver pizzas for?

Newsflash. Nobody is looking to pay a writer who hasn’t written anything.

 Becoming A Toff?

Becoming A Toff?

Ralph Ironman’s astonishing rise from literally the ashes of a deprived family life in 1930s Leicestershire is a testament to energy, inquisitiveness and enterprise.Whether he’s relaxing en famille in Denmark, stalking moose in Sweden, or indulging in a little light industrial espionage in Florida, the author is constantly observing, collating and storing the ideas buzzing in his head. It’s really a story of survival. If your father pays you no attention and your mother is tragically depressed, you go out and find someone who cares. And that’s exactly what Sergeant Ironman did at the end of World War II.Sixty happy years of marriage, forty years of business life as a free-lancer all over Europe and the USA, and he has reached complete contentment – and, as he calls it, ‘toffdom’. Enjoy this inspiring and heart-warming life story from a man who has every reason to relish his success.Ralph Ironman was born in Leicestershire of working-class parents, and educated at local elementary and secondary schools. He subsequently received an engineering education at University College, Nottingham, before becoming a staff-sergeant in the Royal Engineers. After service in Holland and Germany he was demobilized and emigrated to Canada where he became the technical editor for the research division of a provincial hydro-electric power commission. After eight years, Ironman returned to Europe and held similar positions in England and Holland before deciding to become a freelance technical writer and editor. He subsequently built up a successful technical news and advertising sales service for a group of US publications. Ironman has lived in eight differentcountries and travelled extensively in some twenty more. He has a Danish wife and two daughters and lives for a major part of the year in Schleswig-Holstein.

Blueprint Small: Creative Ways to Live with Less

Blueprint Small: Creative Ways to Live with Less

$10.99

When it comes to deciding on the size of a home or living space, one question must be asked: How much space is enough? Americans often relate “enough” space to dimensions, rather than to how a space will really be enjoyed. In Blueprint Small, Michelle Kodis examines small spaces (each 1500 square feet or less) from a wide spectrum of locations, budgets, and individual styles-each chosen because they illustrate that scaling back in size doesn’t have to mean scaling back in comfort, spaciousness, or beauty. From a sleek urban apartment to a funky mountain home to a renovated beach house, Blueprint Small reveals how smaller homes invite rather than overwhelm, comfort rather than alienate. The projects offered here represent a variety of functions, locations and environments, combining the technical aspects of building and using small spaces with the stories of the people who live in them. Blueprint Small invites you to explore inspiring and imaginative ways to inhabit smaller spaces, and still live large. Michelle Kodis is a freelance writer and editor based in Telluride, Colorado. She is the author of Love Scents and The Telluride Cookbook; she has also written for The San Francisco Examiner, The Oregonian, and Backpacker magazine.

 Community Schools In Action

Community Schools In Action

$55.93

A community school differs from other public schools in important ways: it is generally open most of the time, governed by a partnership between the school system and a community agency, and offers a broad array of health and social services. It often has an extended day before and after school, features parent involvement programs, and works for community enrichment. How should such a school be structured? How can its success be measured? Community Schools in Action: Lessons from a Decade of Practice presents the Children’s Aid Society’s (CAS) approach to creating community schools for the 21st century. CAS began this work more than a decade ago and today operates ten such schools in three low-income areas of New York City. Through a technical assistance center operated by CAS, hundreds of other schools across the country and the world are adapting this model. Based on their own experiences working with community schools, the contributors to the volume supply invaluable information about the selected program components. They describe how and why CAS started its community school initiative and explain how CAS community schools are organized, integrated with the school system, sustained, and evaluated. The book also includes several contributions from experts outside of CAS: a city superintendent, an architect, and the director of the Coalition for Community Schools. Co-editors Joy Dryfoos, an authority on community schools, and Jane Quinn, CAS’s Assistant Executive Director of Community Schools, have teamed up with freelance writer Carol Barkin to provide commentary linking the various components together. For those interested in transforming their schools into effective child- andfamily-centered institutions, this book provides a detailed road map. For those concerned with educational and social policy, the book offers a unique example of research-based action that has significant implications for our society.

Completely revised and updated, the second edition includes an entirely new section on the “online writer,” discussing how to set up your own website, whether you need a blog, how to effectively participate in social networking sites, and information on electronic publishing, POD and more. New chapters provide guidance on writing for international markets and other writing opportunities such as ghostwriting, speech-writing, technical writing, copyediting, teaching, etc. This indispensable resource walks writers through the process of developing marketable ideas and then finding appropriate markets for those ideas. It includes effective tips on how to set writing goals; make time for writing; hone research and interview techniques; create outlines and first drafts, approach editors (online and offline), and prepare and submit material. Writers will also discover the vital business issues of freelancing such as rights and contracts, plus how to manage income, expenses, and taxes. Author Moira Allen has more than 30 years experience both as a freelance writer and as an editor; her tips come from a keen understanding of what works from both sides of the desk. Whether readers are looking to support themselves as full-time freelancers or supplement an existing career, no one wanting to make money as a writer can afford to be without this book.

I am a practicing Catholic, and felt a strong desire to see if I could spark more interest in Jesus and His life and teachings. When my husband and I spent 45 minutes a day walking for exercise, I would be praying the rosary and meditating on the various mysteries as I walked. During these meditations, I began to visualize how it would feel to be actually present at some of the events mentioned in the Bible and the mysteries of the rosary. With this inspiration, I began to write my book last year. I have a very strong desire to make Jesus more real, especially to young people. I hope and pray that this little book will help them to do just that. Dorothy Frisby was born, raised and educated in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the mother of four grown children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.Most of Dorothy’s career life has been in the field of computers. She entered the field in B.C. days (Before Computers), and lived through all generations of computers. This meant that her life was a constant learning process, as the computers became obsolete very shortly after they were purchased. During the bulk of those years, she was in middle and upper management. For years, Dorothy worked as a Technical Writer for various companies, as well as doing freelance work. This required her to work with computer programmers and then translate what they did down to simple instructions for mainly computer non-literate users. In the final years of her career, Dorothy began creating documents for use on-line, and designed the layouts and formats for each instructional manual.Retired in 2001, Dorothy is currently enjoying her quiet country life with her husband, Charles, and theircat, “Okay.”
