ROME, ITALY, JANUARY 25, 2011 – If you’re on the Italy beat as a destination for travel, food, wine or lifestyle, there is now a hub for you online: ItalianConnections.net, a recently launched portal that features a community, a social network and an online pressroom, allowing easy communication between Italian travel and tourism operators and the global media who cover Italy.
Created by IMAGINE Communication, an international communication, marketing and training company headquartered in Rome, Italian Connections offers a dynamic and interactive platform that lets members create personal pages, upload photos and videos, share content, post comments and interact with other users in forums.
For media interested in Italy, Italian Connections is a virtual meeting point to participate in a dialogue on Italian travel and tourism and gain direct access to press releases, videos, images and news, published in the online Press Room. So far, 5,000+ journalists from 22 countries have registered.
“Italian Connections wants to elevate and energize the dialogue between the travel and tourism industry in Italy and the international media community,” says Marco Ferrari, Chairman and CEO of IMAGINE Communication.
Recently, IMAGINE Communication partnered with San Francisco-based Burditch Marketing Communications (BMC) to each enhance their global reach. “We know there is great interest in Italy by the U.S. market – according to a new Harris poll, Americans aspire to vacation in Italy more than any other destination,” says Paul Burditch, President of BMC. “We hope to make Italian Connections the number one resource for American media covering Italy.”

Communication and Social Cognition: Theories and Methods $79.69 Communication and Social Cognition represents the explosion of work in the field of social cognition over the past 25 years. Expanding the contribution made by Social Cognition and Communication, published in 1982, this scholarly collection updates the study of communication from a social cognitive perspective, with contributions from well-known experts and promising new scholars in diverse areas of communication. Organized into sections–message production, interpersonal communication, media, and social influence–the collection reflects the areas in which social cognition theories have become integral in understanding communicative processes, and in which a proliferation of scholarship has emerged. Readers are informed of the current major trends in social cognition research, and are introduced to its history. Throughout the text, chapter authors highlight both theoretical and methodological aspects of research, encouraging communication scholars to include social cognition in their research, and, likewise, promoting communication to social cognition researchers. The volume addresses the future of social cognition, including the most fitting directions in which to take scholarship, emerging theories in the field, and the methods currently yielding the most promising results. Communication and Social Cognition appeals to scholars, researchers, and advanced students in communication and psychology. It can be used as a textbook in graduate courses related to social cognition, social influence, message production, interpersonal communication, media effects, and message design. |

24/7: Time and Temporality in the Network Society $29.95 For better or worse, the information and communication revolution has transformed our economic, cultural, and political world. On an individual scale, many of the traditional social, political, and cultural habits of mind and ways of being that evolved under the regime of the clock are changing rapidly, including the way individuals save, spend, and optimize time. At the organizational level, the pacing of innovation, levels of production, and new product development, are no longer temporally fixed due to the effects of living in a networked society and in the networked economy. 24/7 brings together leading thinkers from a variety of disciplines to analyze the differing relationships to time in an accelerated society. Offering much-needed insight and perspective into new issues and problems, this unique volume is the first to offer a wide range of cutting-edge thought on the new economic, cultural, and political world of the networked society. The book includes contributions from the leading scholars in this area, such as Barbara Adam, Mike Crang, Thomas Hylland Erikson, and Geert Lovink. |

A Survey Of Statistical Network Models $85 Networks have found a prominent place in our everyday life. In science, networks have been used to analyze interpersonal social relationships, communication, academic paper co-authorships and citations, protein interaction patterns, and much more. Popular books on networks and their analysis began to appear a decade ago, and online “networking communities” such as Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn now include millions of people from around the world. Formal statistical modeling for the analysis of network data has emerged as a major research topic in diverse areas of study.A Survey of Statistical Network Models aims to provide the reader with an entry point to the voluminous literature on statistical network modeling. It guides the reader through the development of key stochastic network models, touches upon a number of examples and commonalities across different parts of the network literature, and discusses major schools of thought in static and dynamic network modeling. In addition, it illuminates the interconnections between existing models. Despite the rich and extensive network modeling literature, many statistical questions remain unanswered. It is hoped that the concluding discussion of gaps and challenges will help the interested reader deduce important future research directions. |

Algorithmics of Large and Complex Networks: Design, Analysis, and Simulation $79.95 Networks play a central role in today’s society, since many sectors employing information technology, such as communication, mobility, and transport – even social interactions and political activities – are based on and rely on networks. In these times of globalization and the current global financial crisis with its complex and nearly incomprehensible entanglements of various structures and its huge effect on seemingly unrelated institutions and organizations, the need to understand large networks, their complex structures, and the processes governing them is becoming more and more important. This state-of-the-art survey reports on the progress made in selected areas of this important and growing field, thus helping to analyze existing large and complex networks and to design new and more efficient algorithms for solving various problems on these networks since many of them have become so large and complex that classical algorithms are not sufficient anymore. This volume emerged from a research program funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) consisting of projects focusing on the design of new discrete algorithms for large and complex networks. The 18 papers included in the volume present the results of projects realized within the program and survey related work. They have been grouped into four parts: network algorithms, traffic networks, communication networks, and network analysis and simulation. |

AllPeers was a free software extension for the Mozilla Firefox browser introduced in 2006. On March 2, 2008, AllPeers announced the end of the service. The extension allowed building a social network and sharing files on a P2P basis. It used a darknet style of peer-to-peer communication; files and information shared between users are only accessible as long as the users have each other on their respective access lists – their ‘trusted private network’. AllPeers beta version was launched on August 24, 2006. It worked on Windows, Linux and Mac, which, once downloaded, becomes a toolbar in Mozilla Firefox. |

An examination of native and immigrant students’ social networking using the college search and selection process. $49.99 This dissertation explores the use of formal and informal networks through cyber- and traditional communication methods in the college search and selection process by native and immigrant students to examine various postulates and propositions of social capital theory. In addition, the analysis of cybernetworks used by disadvantaged, college bound immigrant students in the United States furthers our understanding of the equalization of opportunity and/or replication of the social divide found with more traditional social networks.;The research methods consisted of archival data analysis with chat room transcripts; six on-line focus groups of 21 first year students from The City University of New York (CUNY); and one on-line survey distributed to 9,240 CUNY first year students. SPSS and NVivo qualitative analytical software were used to conduct frequency, statistical significance, correlation and linear relationships analyses.;These results confirm the use of a greater variety of formal and informal networks by students. No preference for either the use of formal or informal networks was found among all respondents. However, immigrant students found that formal networks such as guidance counselors, admissions counselors, high school teacher and current college students provided the most useful information compared to their informal networks. Friends as an informal network were the only exception. These findings support the strength-of-weak-ties and strength-of strong-ties postulates. Immigrants show a greater variety of network usage especially through cyber-communication methods. Perhaps as a result, lower SES immigrant students were found to enroll more in four-year CUNY colleges compared to lower SES native students. Lower/middle SES immigrants that used email—mainly with friends—and static college search Web sites had a greater perception than natives of the same SES that their degree would result in their improved SES a finding that challenges the social |

Astronomy Communication $189 Astronomers communicate all the time, with colleagues of course, but also with managers and administrators, with decision makers and takers, with social representatives, with the news media, and with society at large. Education is naturally part of the process. Astronomy communication must take into account several specifics: the astronomy community is rather compact and well organized world-wide; astronomy has penetrated the general public remarkably well with an extensive network of associations and organizations of aficionados all over the world. Also, as a result of the huge amount of data accumulated and by necessity for their extensive international collaborations, astronomers have pioneered the development of distributed resources, electronic communications and networks coupled to advanced methodologies and technologies, often long before they become commonly used world-wide. This book is filling a gap in the astronomy-related literature by providing a set of chapters not only of direct interest to astronomy communication, but also well beyond it. The experts contributing to this book have done their best to write in a way understandable to readers not necessarily hyperspecialized in astronomy nor in communication techniques while providing specific detailed information, as well as plenty of pointers and bibliographic elements. This book will be very useful for researchers, teachers, editors, publishers, librarians, computer scientists, sociologists of science, research planners and strategists, project managers, public-relations officers, plus those in charge of astronomy-related organizations, as well as for students aiming at a career in astronomy or related space science. |

Communicating Science in Social Contexts: New models, new practices $199 Science communication, as a multidisciplinary field, has developed remarkably in recent years. It is now a distinct and exceedingly dynamic science that melds theoretical approaches with practical experience. Formerly well-established theoretical models now seem out of step with the social reality of the sciences, and the previously clear-cut delineations and interacting domains between cultural fields have blurred. Communicating Science in Social Contexts examines that shift, which itself depicts a profound recomposition of knowledge fields, activities and dissemination practices, and the value accorded to science and technology.Communicating Science in Social Contexts is the product of a long-term effort that would not have been possible without the research and expertise of the Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) Network and the editors. For nearly 20 years, this informal, international network has been organizing events and forums for discussion of the public communication of science. This valuable tool is recommended for those interested in teaching people how to cope in a society dominated by science and technology, particularly researchers, science journalists, science museum and science centers staff, academic researchers who study aspects of PCST, scientists who interact closely with the public, press and public information officers of scientic institutions, science theater directors, and anyone interested in issues related to science communication. |

Communication Power $12.81 Hailed by The Financial Times as “the most prominent and influential theorist and analyst of the modern communications and network age,” Manuel Castells here offers a ground-breaking account of the modern communication revolution, a dramatic transformation of technology–and of the signals we receive–that is changing the way we feel, think, and behave. And that, writes Castells, is creating a revolution in power. With his landmark trilogy, The Information Age, Castells offered one of the first comprehensive analyses of how the Internet was creating a networked society. Now he draws on neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and case histories from around the world to explore the psychology of decision making in the new communications environment, highlighting the rise of communication power. He ranges widely, exploring global media deregulation, the misinformation that surrounded the invasion of Iraq, environmental movements, the role of the Internet in the Obama presidential campaign, and media control in Russia and China. In a network society, he writes, politics is fundamentally media politics–and the politics of scandal is its epitome. That fact is behind a worldwide crisis of political legitimacy that challenges the meaning of democracy in much of the world. More fundamentally, Castells argues, the Internet’s instant messaging, social networking, and blogging have given rise a new communication system, mass self-communication, that is profoundly altering power relationships. Deeply researched, far-reaching in scope, and incisively argued, Communication Power offers a profound new understanding of implications of the information revolution. “Castells has done it again, a masterpiece of global perspective and enviable erudition.” –W. Russell Neuman, Evans Professor of Media Technology, University of Michigan “A powerful and much needed book for a world in crisis.” –Antonio Damasio, Director, Brain and Creativity |

Communications and Networking in Education: Learning in a Networked Society $172.05 In most schools the dominant supporting technology has been either the stand-alone personal computer or a modest local network. The situation is changing rapidly as a rising number of schools provide access to the Internet for their staff and pupils, opening avenues for communication and networking hitherto not possible. This book reflects on this change. It aims to further the vision of how these new technologies could improve and transform aspects of education. Yet in parallel it asks serious questions about the realities of an interface between the social, cultural and pedagogical contexts of education and the actual affordances that these new information and communication technologies offer. The chapters in this book provide a heady mix of foresight and practical reporting, of planning for the future but at the same time respecting the problems education already has with current technologies. The richness of the points presented here stems in part from the range of experience of the international authors – from academics and administrators, to teachers and curriculum designers. This mix ensures that the central questions on communications and networking in education are considered not simply from a variety of personal perspectives, but also from different cultural and environmental experiences. And yet interest also lies in the commonality of reporting and discussion based on activity in the field. All the contributions draw heavily on research and experience in devising and running projects and experimental activities in a range of schools and teacher-training institutions and environments. The opinions expressed are thus grounded in knowledge gained from work embedded in the reality of today’s educational settings. This must be the only sound base upon which to consider the issues of the future. This book is essential reading for all professionals involved in all aspects of information and communication technologies in education. Teachers, |

Cyberspaces of Everyday Life $25.33 Networks and computer-mediated communication now penetrate the spaces of everyday life at a fundamental level. We communicate, work, bank, date, check the weather, and fuel conspiracy theories online. In each instance, users interact with network technology as much more than a computational device. Cyberspaces of Everyday Life provides a critical framework for understanding how the Internet takes part in the production of social space. Mark Nunes draws on the spatial analysis work of Henri Lefebvre to make sense of cyberspace as a social product. Looking at online education, he explores the ways in which the Internet restructures the university. Nunes also examines social uses of the World Wide Web and illustrates the ways online communication alters the relation between the global and the local. He also applies Deleuzian theory to emphasize computer-mediated communications’ performative elements of spatial production. Addressing the social and cultural implications of spam and anti-spam legislation, as well as how the burst Internet stock bubble and the Patriot Act have affected the relationship between networked spaces and daily living, Cyberspaces of Everyday Life sheds new light on the question of virtual space and its role in the offline world. Mark Nunes is associate professor and chair of the English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts Department at Southern Polytechnic State University. |

Decision Modeling in Policy Management: An Introduction to the Analytic Concepts $202 The effectiveness of policy decisions depends not only on the quality of the analysis but also on the communication between analyst and decision-maker. As a result, this book employs the following three-step decomposition of the decision modeling process throughout the book: (1) visual-structural modeling, (2) analytic-formal modeling, and (3) algorithmic resolution modeling. The 10 chapters address the most relevant issues in decision modeling in policy management: the problem-solving process, visual decision modeling, descriptive and normative preference elicitation and aggregation methods, dealing with uncertainty in dynamic problems, social choices, conflict resolution, and constraint-optimization problems. A problem-oriented engineering approach has been taken throughout the book because this approach covers the most popular decision modeling issues in: (1) decision analysis (decision trees, probabilistic influence diagrams, fuzzy decision-making, risk analysis), (2) operations research (facility location, scheduling, linear and non-linear programming, network optimization), and (3) economics (cost-benefit analysis, capital budgeting, shadow prices, marginal rate of substitution, net present value, game theory).Decision Modeling in Policy Management: Introduces a visual approach to decision modeling in policy management (over 100 figures and illustrations), integrating the European School (outranking relations, dimension reduction, ordinal preferences, rank correlation) and the American School (utility theory, analytic hierarchy process, game theory, constraint-optimization).Presents analytic approaches in the context of structural, formal, and resolution modeling; references tofurther practical and theoretical readings; intuitive visual reasoning; detailed numerical examples replacing theorems and formal proofs.Discusses new decision analytical features: visual interactive preference ordering; dynamic plots in virtual negotiation; hypermedia influence diagram |

Dynamics of large networks. $49.99 A basic premise behind the study of large networks is that interaction leads to complex collective behavior. In our work we found very interesting and counterintuitive patterns for time evolving networks , which change some of the basic assumptions that were made in the past. We then develop models that explain processes which govern the network evolution, fit such models to real networks, and use them to generate realistic graphs or give formal explanations about their properties. In addition, our work has a wide range of applications: it can help us spot anomalous graphs and outliers, forecast future graph structure and run simulations of network evolution.;Another important aspect of our research is the study of “local” patterns and structures of propagation in networks. We aim to identify building blocks of the networks and find the patterns of influence that these blocks have on information or virus propagation over the network. Our recent work included the study of the spread of influence in a large person-to-person product recommendation network and its effect on purchases. We also model the propagation of information on the blogosphere, and propose algorithms to efficiently find influential nodes in the network.;A central topic of our thesis is also the analysis of large datasets as certain network properties only emerge and thus become visible when dealing with lots of data. We analyze the world’s largest social and communication network of Microsoft Instant Messenger with 240 million people and 255 billion conversations. We also made interesting and counterintuitive observations about network community structure that suggest that only small network clusters exist, and that they merge and vanish as they grow. |

Educational Research: Networks and Technologies $159 There have always been networks in the context of educational research as well as particular technologies. Yet recent developments in ICT have put their mark on contemporary education and on educational research and more in general on knowledge and understanding. Does the ‘network society’ and its supporting technologies constitute a thoroughly radical innovation in social practice? Does information technology poison the minds of the younger generation? Do educational institutions have to be transformed in order to effectively serve the needs of the twenty-first century? And what are the implications of these changes for educational research and for researchers themselves? In this book distinguished philosophers and historians of education focus on the way ‘networks’ and ‘technologies’ characterize education and educational research nowadays. Attention is paid for instance to online networks as ‘spaces’ and ‘places’ that are changing research practices and relations, to the involvement of the researcher in the moral debate, but also to particular educational technologies such as the use of experts’ advice concerning Internet use, the American True Love Waits movement and the practice of punishment in schools. “This groundbreaking book records the intellectual struggles of a diverse and distinguished group of scholars as they come to grips with the changes in knowledge production, and modes of research communication, engendered by contemporary information and communications technology. The book performs a major service in placing the phenomenon of networks – their potentialities and also their dangers – squarely on our intellectual agenda.”D.C. Phillips, Professor Emeritus of Education and Philosophy, Stanford University”In this book, a rich array of international scholars in the philosophy and history of education address a pressing concern in contemporary educational research and |

El arte de narrar en la era de las blogoficciones: Una aproximacion interdisciplinaria a la literatura en los blogs. $69 This dissertation constitutes an interdisciplinary approach to electronic narratives, which explores the impact of recent technological developments in the literary field. The work of theorists and scholars such as Henry Jenkins, Jean Baudrillard, Lev Manovich, Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, Erving Goffman, Sherry Turkle, George Landow, Marie-Laure Ryan and Espen Aarseth, among many others, are applied to the study of how key sociological and narratological concepts acquire new meanings when implemented in an electronic environment. More specifically, this research provides evidence of how emerging media culture challenges the traditional concepts of authorship, textuality, fictionality, sequential structure, and readership, with tendencies toward anonimity, pseudonymity, collaborative authorship, hypertextual narrative structures, and the reader’s involvement in the creative process. Chapter One lays out the methodology used for the study of blog-fictions. This chapter proposes an interdisciplinary approach to blogging which combines the contributions made in several fields of study within digital humanities: computer-mediated communication theory, hypertext theory, Internet ethnography, social network theory, narratology of hypertext, research on blogging and Web 2.0, ludology and performance studies. The purpose of this chapter is to conceptualize the study of blog-fictions both as an expression of information society in its current state, and as a new fictional genre that challenges traditional narrative concepts. In Chapter Two (“Blogosphere: a network of social convergences”), the center of analysis concerns the study of the blogger as a social type who reproduces its social life on the Internet. This chapter studies the peculiar and new ways in which bloggers communicate with each other and create social networks through the production and distribution of texts, hyperlinks, and multimedia artifacts. Chapter Three presents a theory of the blog-text focussing on its |

Evolution of Communication Systems: A Comparative Approach $28.91 The search for origins of communication in a wide variety of species including humans is rapidly becoming a thoroughly interdisciplinary enterprise. In this volume, scientists engaged in the fields of evolutionary biology, linguistics, animal behavior, developmental psychology, philosophy, the cognitive sciences, robotics, and neural network modeling come together to explore a comparative approach to the evolution of communication systems. The comparisons range from parrot talk to squid skin displays, from human language to Aibo the robot dog’s language learning, and from monkey babbling to the newborn human infant cry. The authors explore the mysterious circumstances surrounding the emergence of human language, which they propose to be intricately connected with drastic changes in human lifestyle. While it is not yet clear what the physical environmental circumstances were that fostered social changes in the hominid line, the volume offers converging evidence and theory from several lines of research suggesting that language depended upon the restructuring of ancient human social groups. The volume also offers new theoretical treatments of both primitive communication systems and human language, providing new perspectives on how to recognize both their similarities and their differences. Explorations of new technologies in robotics, neural network modeling and pattern recognition offer many opportunities to simulate and evaluate theoretical proposals. The North American and European scientists who have contributed to this volume represent a vanguard of thinking about how humanity came to have the capacity for language and how nonhumans provide a background of remarkable capabilities thathelp clarify the foundations of speech. |

Evolution of Networks: From Biological Nets to the Internet and WWW $125 Only recently did mankind realize that it resides on a world of networks. The Internet and the World Wide Web are changing our life. Our physical existence is based on various biological networks. We have recently learned that the term "network" turns out to be a central notion in our time, and the consequent explosion of interest in networks is a social and cultural phenomenon. The principles of the complex organization and evolution of networks, natural and artificial are the topic of this book, which is written by physicists and is addressed to all involved researchers and students. The aim of the text is to understand networks and the basic principles of their structural organization and evolution. The ideas are presented in a clear and pedagogical way, with minimal mathematics, so even students without a deep knowledge of mathematics and statistical physics will be able to rely on this as a reference. Special attention is given to real networks, both natural and artificial. Collected empirical data and numerous real applications of existing theories are discussed in detail, as well as the topical problems of communication networks. |
