C# Network Programming $42.99 On its own, C# simplifies network programming. Combine it with the precise instruction found in C# Network Programming, and you’ll find that building network applications is easier and quicker than ever. This book helps newcomers get started with a look at the basics of network programming as they relate to C#, including the language’s network classes, the Winsock interface, and DNS resolution. Spend as much time here as you need, then dig into the core topics of the network layer. You’ll learn to make sockets connections via TCP and “connectionless” connections via UDP. You’ll also discover just how much help C# gives you with some of your toughest chores, such as asynchronous socket programming, multithreading, and multicasting. Network-layer techniques are just a means to an end, of course, and so this book keeps going, providing a series of detailed application-layer programming examples that show you how to work with real protocols and real network environments to build and implement a variety of applications. Use SNMP to manage network devices, SMTP to communicate with remote mail servers, and HTTP to Web-enable your applications. And use classes native to C# to query and modify Active Directory entries. Rounding it all out is plenty of advanced coverage to push your C# network programming skills to the limit. For example, you’ll learn two ways to share application methods across the network: using Web services and remoting. You’ll also master the security features intrinsic to C# and .NET–features that stand to benefit all of your programming projects. |

Communication Power $24.95 We live in the midst of a revolution in communication technologies that affects the way in which people feel, think, and behave. The media have become the space where power strategies are played out. In the current technological context mass communication goes beyond traditional media and includes the Internet and mobile communication. In this wide-ranging and powerful book, Manuel Castells analyses the transformation of the global media industry by this revolution in communication technologies. He argues that a new communication system, mass self-communication, has emerged, and power relationships have been profoundly modified by the emergence of this new communication environment. Created in the commons of the Internet this communication can be locally based, but globally connected. It is built through messaging, socialnetworks sites, and blogging, and is now being used by the millions around the world who have access to the Internet.Drawing on a wide range of social and psychological theories, Castells presents original research on political processes and social movements, including the misinformation of the American public on the Iraq War, the global environmental movement to prevent climate change, the control of information in China and Russia, and Internet-based political campaigns, such as the Obama campaign in the United States. On the basis of these case studies he proposes a new theory of power in the informationage based on the management of communication networksJustly celebrated for his analysis of the network society, Castells here builds on that work, offering a well grounded and immensely challenging picture of communication and power in the 21st century. This is a book for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics and character of the modern world. |

Theorizing Communication $110 This book offers the first detailed intellectual history of communication study, from its beginnings in late nineteenth-century critiques of corporate capitalism and the burgeoning American wireline communications industry, to contemporary information theory and poststructuralist accounts of communicative activity. Schiller identifies a problematic split between manual and intellectual labor that outlasts each of the field’s major conceptual departures, and from this vital perspective builds a rigorous critical survey of work aiming to understand the nexus of media, ideology, and information in a society. Looking closely at the thought of John Dewey, C. Wright Mills, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, Daniel Bell, and others, Schiller carefully maps the transformation of ideas about communication and culture as issues of corporate power, mass persuasion, cultural imperialism, and information expansion succeed one another in prominence. Bringing his analysis of communication theory into the present, Schiller concludes by limning a unitary model of society’s cultural/informational production, one that broadens the concept of “labor” to include all forms of human self-activity. Powerful, challenging, and original, Theorizing Communication: A History offers a brilliantly constructed overview of the history of communication study, and will interest scholars working in the field as well as those working in critical theory, cultural studies, and twentieth-century intellectual history. |

Pricing Communication Networks $167.99 Traditionally engineers devised communication services without reference to how they should be priced. In today’s environment pricing is a very complex subject and in practice depends on many parameters of the actual market – including amount of traffic, architecture of the network, technology, and cost. The challenge is to provide a generic service model which accurately captures aspects such as quality and performance, and can be used to derive optimal pricing strategies. Recent technology advances, combined with the deregulation of the telecommunication market and the proliferation of the internet, have created a highly competitive environment for communication service prividers. Pricing is no longer as simple as picking an appropriate model for a particular contract. There is a real need for a book that explains the provision of new services, the relation between pricing and resource allocation in networks; and the emergence of the internet and how to price it. Pricing Communication Networks provides a framework of mathematical models for pricing these multidimensional contracts, and includes background in network services and contracts, network techonology, basic economics, and pricing strategy. It can be used by economists to fill in the gaps in their knowledge of network services and technology, and for engineers and operational researchers to gain the background in economics required to price communication services effectively. * Provides a broad overview of network services and contracts. * Includes a primer on modern network technology and the economic concepts relevant to pricing and competition. * Includes discussion of mathematical models of traffic flow to help describe network capability and derive pricing strategies. * Includes coverage of specialist topics, such as regulation, multicasting, and auctions. * Illustrated throughout by detailed real examples. * Suitable for anyone with an understanding of basic calculus and probability. Primarily aimed at graduate students, researchers and practitioners from electrical engineering, computer science, economics and operations research Pricing Communication Networks will also appeal to telecomms engineers working in industry. |

Apache Thrift $81.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Thrift is a remote procedure call framework developed at Facebook for “scalable cross-language services development”. It combines a software stack with a code generation engine to build services that work efficiently and seamlessly between C++, C#, Java, Perl, Python, PHP, Erlang and Ruby. Although developed at Facebook, it is now an open source project in the Apache Software Foundation Incubator. The implementation was described in an April 2007 technical paper released by Facebook, now hosted on Apache In computer science, a remote procedure call (RPC) is an inter-process communication that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. That is, the programmer writes essentially the same code whether the subroutine is local to the executing program, or remote. When the software in question uses object-oriented principles, RPC is called remote invocation or remote method invocation. |

Application of multi-agents to power distribution systems. $49.99 The electric power system has become a very complicated network at present because of re-structuring and the penetration of distributed energy resources. In addition, due to increasing demand for power, issues such as transmission congestion have made the power system stressed. A single fault can lead to massive cascading effects, affecting the power supply and power quality. An overall solution for these issues can be obtained by a new artificial intelligent mechanism called the multi-agent system. A multi-agent system is a collection of agents, which senses the environmental changes and acts diligently on the environment in order to achieve its objectives. Due to the increasing speed and decreasing cost in communication and computation of complex matrices, multi-agent system promise to be a viable solution for today’s intrinsic network problems.;A multi-agent system model for fault detection and reconfiguration is presented in this thesis. These models are developed based on graph theory and mathematical programming. A mathematical model is developed to specify the objective function and the constraints.;The multi-agent models are simulated in Java Agent Development Framework and MatlabRTM and are applied to the power system model designed in the commercial software, Distributed Engineering Workstation(c) . Excerpt: ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), created by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the United States Department of Defense, was the world’s first operational packet switching network, and the predecessor of the contemporary global Internet. The packet switching of the ARPANET was based on designs by Lawrence Roberts, of the Lincoln Laboratory. Packet switching, now the dominant basis for data communications worldwide, then was a new and important concept. Data communications had been based upon the idea of circuit switching, as in the old, typical telephone circuit, wherein a dedicated circuit is occupied for the duration of the telephone call, and communication is possible only with the single party at the far end of the circuit. With packet switching, a data system could use one communications link to communicate with more than one machine by disassembling data into datagrams, then gather these as packets. Thus, not only could the link be shared (much as a single post box can be used to post letters to different destinations), but each packet could be routed independently of other packets. The earliest ideas for a computer network intended to allow general communications among computer users were formulated by the computer scientist J. C. R. Licklider, of the Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) company, in August 1962, in memoranda discussing his concept for an Intergalactic Computer Network. Those ideas contained almost everything that composes the contemporary Internet. In October 1963, at the United States Department of Defense, Licklider was appointed head of the Behavioral Sciences and Command and Control programs, at the Advanced Research Projects Agency ARPA (the initial ARPANET acronym). He then conv… More: |

Building and optimizing declarative networked systems. $49.99 In the face of progressively diverse networking technologies and application traffic, it is increasingly infeasible to custom engineer networked systems for each scenario. Moreover, an expanding class of networks, networked embedded systems, are very difficult to program, yet require a high degree of per-deployment programming customization. We investigate a declarative approach to building and optimizing networked systems, with emphasis on networked embedded systems. Our findings indicate that ideas from data management may yield dividends for the design of networked systems in two key areas: (1) declarative interfaces for simplicity yet breadth of expressiveness, and (2) automatic optimizations for automatic performance improvements on the users’ behalf. This dissertation reports on three efforts. First, we designed and implemented DSN: a declarative language, runtime and compiler for networked embedded systems. The new logic-based language in DSN has been highly intuitive for programming—in one case, an algorithm designers’ pseudocode mapped nearly line-for-line to working DSN code. Typically, lines-of-code are reduced by an order of magnitude vs. implementations in traditional embedded languages. We built a complementary compiler and runtime that showed negligible performance drop off vs. hand-tuned C implementations. As a result, we have been able to build whole system stacks—save for device drivers—entirely declaratively in under a hundred lines of code. Next, we designed and implemented netopt, a network optimizer that relieves programmers from having to manually solve two general networking problems: rendezvous and proxy selection. As part of this effort, we created novel program analysis and transformation algorithms to automatically select optimal communication rendezvous and proxies based on traffic and network conditions. When combined with either the DSN system, or similar systems for PC-class devices, user programs get 1–2 orders of |

Cellex-C Age Less 15 Skin Signaling Serum 4 oz $472.5 Cellex-C Age Less 15 Skin Signaling Serum 4 oz Cellex-C Age Less 15 is a pale-pink, fragrance-free serum designed to help your skin look and act younger than its actual age. The gel-like texture of Cellex-C Age Less 15 provides both support for the skin cells and the medium for the molecular communicating process called cell signaling. What is Age Less 15 Skin Signaling Serum? Skin signaling is a true innovation in skincare technology that introduces a new approach to maintaining youthful looking skin. Tests indicate that Age Less 15 Skin Signaling Serum makes the skin look significantly younger with 6-14 weeks of regular application. What is skin signaling? Your skin is being sent signals all the timendashthe life cycle of your skin cells is guided by a molecular communicating process called cell signaling. By the time we reach our forties, cellular damage begins to impair this communication network. Cells receiving poor signals reduce collagen production. When this happens, layers within the skin begin to slowly retract, causing the epidermis to let go of the dermis. The result is the all too familiar signs of agingndashthe loosening of skin and the appearance of jowls, neck cords and rough textured skin typical of many fifty-plus women. How does Age Less 15 work to correct this mis-signaling? Cellex-C’s Cosmeceutical answer is corrective signaling. Cellex-C’s breakthrough formulation of specific ingredients works to replenish the signaling molecules in the skin that are depleted by aging. Simply put, the idea is the help your skin cells behave as they did when they were younger. What are some typical results of Age Less 15? Tests on women ages 45-85 indicate that with regular use: Skin looks significantly younger than its actual age. Facial contours look fuller, reducing the appearance of sagging skin. Skin texture becomes remarkably smooth and silky. Skin around the jaw line seems to cling more fimly to the substructure, creating a firmer |

Dynamic network formation using ant colony optimization. $49.99 Military and industry are moving toward every device being network enabled and connected for reliable availability of communication and information. To make this type of system a reality, the devices must be capable of forming a network topology on their own in a dynamic environment to ensure that the correct information reaches a desired location and on-time. This research presents three contributions for solving highly dynamic (i.e. drastic change within the network) Multi-commodity Capacitated Network Design Problems (MCNDPs) resulting in a distributed multi-agent network design algorithm. The first contribution incorporates an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm Ant Colony System (ACS) to solve the static MCNDP with weak constraints. Second, a new algorithm is developed and has the capability to dynamically adjust its exploration parameter of the solution space. This enhanced algorithm converges quicker and automatically adjusts to the dynamically changing network environment. Third, a distributed approach is created replacing the previous centralized solver. The distributed algorithm produces comparable results, but more importantly calculates the network topology in less than 20 percent of the computation time. |

Facilitating communication and effective interpersonal relationships at work: A theoretical model of socio-affective competence. $49.99 The research reported here provides an introduction to a theoretical model of socio-affective competence. This conceptual model of social effectiveness consists of four competencies that are related to the development of effective interpersonal relationships in the workplace. These competencies include: establishing rapport, promoting acceptance of differences, developing trust and cultivating charismatic influence. The socio-affective competence model was formulated in an attempt to integrate research on social and emotional skills that have been linked to performance in organizations. The current research proposed the model and defined its competency areas, designed a socio-affective competence situational judgment test (SAC-SJT), identified the variables that were theoretically related and unrelated to the construct, and provided initial evidence in support of the criterion-related validity of the socio-affective competence framework. Results from two different studies established the foundation of the socio-affective competence nomological network and demonstrated the predictive validity of the SAC-SJT on job performance, relational behaviors, and organizational citizenship performance. The author discusses the benefits of developing interpersonal relationship skills and the relevance of these findings in organizational settings. |

Framework for botnet emulation and analysis. $49.99 Criminals use the anonymity and pervasiveness of the Internet to commit fraud, extortion, and theft. Botnets are used as the primary tool for this criminal activity. Botnets allow criminals to accumulate and covertly control multiple Internet-connected computers. They use this network of controlled computers to flood networks with traffic from multiple sources, send spam, spread infection, spy on users, commit click fraud, run adware, and host phishing sites. This presents serious privacy risks and financial burdens to businesses and individuals. Furthermore, all indicators show that the problem is worsening because the research and development cycle of the criminal industry is faster than that of security research.;To enable researchers to measure botnet connection models and counter-measures, a flexible, rapidly augmentable framework for creating test botnets is provided. This botnet framework, written in the Ruby language, enables researchers to run a botnet on a closed network and to rapidly implement new communication, spreading, control, and attack mechanisms for study. This is a significant improvement over augmenting C++ code-bases for the most popular botnets, Agobot and SDBot. Rubot allows researchers to implement new threats and their corresponding defenses before the criminal industry can. The Rubot experiment framework includes models for some of the latest trends in botnet operation such as peer-to-peer based control, fast-flux DNS, and periodic updates.;Our approach implements the key network features from existing botnets and provides the required infrastructure to run the botnet in a closed environment. |

Chapters: Photophone, Intensity Modulation, Optical Communication, Modulating Retro-Reflector, Optical Carrier Transmission Rates, Visible Light Communications, Mamyshev 2r Regenerator, Optical Transport Network, Ipodwdm, Cerent Corporation, Optical Modulation Amplitude, Optical Wireless, Optical Fiber Conference. Excerpt: The photophone, also known as a radiophone, was invented jointly by Alexander Graham Bell and his then-assistant Charles Sumner Tainter on February 19, 1880, at Bell’s 1325 ‘L’ Street laboratory in Washington, D.C. Both were later to become full associates in the Volta Laboratory Association, created and financed by Bell. Bell believed the photophone was his most important invention. The device allowed for the transmission of sound on a beam of light. On April 1, 1880, and also described by plaque as occurring on June 3, Bell transmitted the world’s first wireless telephone message on his newly invented form of telecommunication, the far advanced precursor to fiber-optic communications. The wireless call was sent from the Franklin School to the window of Bell’s laboratory, some 213 meters away. Of the eighteen patents granted in Bell’s name alone, and the twelve he shared with his collaborators, four were for the photophone, which Bell referred to as his ‘greatest achievement’, writing that the photophone was “the greatest invention ever made, greater than the telephone”. Bell transferred the photophone’s rights to the National Bell Telephone Company in May, 1880. The master patent for the photophone ( Apparatus for Signalling and Communicating, called Photophone), was issued in December 1880, many decades before its principles could be applied to practical applications. Chapters: Railway Stations in Bolivia, Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia, Arica-La Paz Railway, Puerto Quijarro, Rio Mulatos-Potosí Line, Cóndor Station. Excerpt: The Bolivian rail network has had a peculiar development throughout its history, owing to losses of land, prestige and credit rating due to the failure of the War of the Pacific, railway development came late to Bolivia. The demand for mineral wealth and communication to the inland city of La Paz, encouraged capitalists, mainly British, to build railways. However, into this mix came the experience of railway building in adjacent Peru, whereby overbuilding of standard gauge line across the high Andes meant that Peru went bankrupt. Lines were built to furnish the nitrate deposits at Arica, and later at Antofagasta. The rapidly expanding tin and silver mining in Bolivia meant that railway building projects were given a big impetus from the 1920s. Many of the lines remained unfinished until the 1950s. Bolivia had a mixture of lines and gauges, in (1,435 mm) (standard) and in) (meter gauge) were the norm; as were British-built engines. The railway lines radiated out from the mines to the coast, and did not reflect the population centres and their need to move. Consequently, it was in the mid-century that lines were built across the high plain to Argentina and into the jungle of eastern Bolivia. The disconnected nature of travel due to the Andes, Lake Titicaca, gauge change, frontiers, and lasting resentment with the neighbours over territory loss, meant that railways in Bolivia were incomplete. Most railways in Argentina are gauge and thus problematic with neighbouring Bolivia. A line was made connecting the two across the Gran Chaco. All railways in Bolivia are now in) Metre gauge. Real-time and embedded systems building blocks for cyber-physical systems. $49.99 By converging the cyber world with the physical world, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is expected to create a great impact on computer science and the society. This thesis proposes several real-time building blocks for CPS infrastructures. As for real-time wireless LAN, I compare various wireless communication paradigms and show that by deploying largest processing gain possible (i.e. lowest bit rate), DSSS-CDMA cell phone paradigm (i.e. each control loop occupies a CDMA channel between the remote station and the base station) achieves much higher reliability/robustness than main stream alternatives, such as IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15.4, and convolutional coding. For example, if a control loop sends one packet per second with a packet size of 152 bits, a DSSS-CDMA communication link using largest processing gain possible takes about 20dB more power to jam compared to an IEEE 802.11b link using packet retransmission. If the control loop sends ten packets per second, a DSSS-CDMA communication link is about 10dB more robust than an IEEE 802.11b link. As for real-time wired network, I propose a real-time crossbar switch design, which is not only compatible to, but also simpler than the main stream iSLIP switch design. Specifically, since real-time flows are predetermined and run consistently for long time, an iSLIP switch can be easily revised into a real-time switch: we only need to grant according to a deterministic schedule; and eliminate the request and accept steps. The schedule can be represented as an N by M matrix S, where N is the number of input(output) ports of the crossbar switch, and M cell-time is the period of the schedule. Let S(i,k) denote the element at the ith row and kth column of S. Then at the kth cell-time of each period, the ith input port forwards a cell to the S(i,k)th output port. Basically, this means the switch serves each real-time flow with clock-driven time-slicing. A flow of period P cell-time and message size of C cells are |

Safety, Rescue, And Emergency Response In A Post 9/11 World $85.9 In recent years, large scale incidents have increasingly become a major global problem, from terrorism to natural disasters. Emergency responders are ill-equipped, needing improved information and communication tools. This book describes development of new technologies to mitigate emergencies and to help first-responders be more effective at large urban/industrial incidents. It begins with a ‘user-needs’ study conducted with major US Fire Departments, highlighting the need for improved communication and visual spatial information. Later Chapters describe a wireless sensor network that can readily be installed in a building, transmit incident conditions, track responder locations, and provide redundancy in communications. The book also describes new tools for the Chief and the personnel involved in the incident scene, including the FireEye head-mounted display. Human subjects experiments show up to 60% improvement in navigation effectiveness, enhancing victim rescue and fire attack. This book will be of great interest to the fire, police, and military communities, and to those designing or implementing head-mounted displays, emergency response equipment, and sensor networks. |

Transport Sample Protocol $68.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Transport Sample Protocol (TSP) is an open source network protocol for sampling data. It is based on TCP/IP and allows synchronous or asynchronous sample delivery.Implementations for Linux, Windows, Solaris, OSF1 and VxWorks in C and Java have been released under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product’s source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code. Opening the source code enabled a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Subsequently, a new, three-word phrase “open source software” was born to describe the environment that the new copyright, licensing, domain, and consumer issues created. |

Young D.C. $42.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Young D.C. is an independent, metropolitan area newspaper written by and about Washington, D.C. area teens. Launched in 1991, Young D.C. (YDC) has its roots in the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial study Captive Voices: the Report of the Commission of Inquiry into High School Journalism (1974). Vigilance, it said, on the part of educators and established media was essential to ensure young people’s understanding of their Constitutional rights. Equally important, those educators and members of the media needed to commit to inclusion of minorities in journalism education programs. Commissioner Ann Therese Heintz and RFK fellow Craig Trygstad became leaders of Youth Communication, a youth journalism movement. Joining them was George Curry, the journalist who originated minority student journalism workshops in 1977. Youth Communication grew to a network of ten independent teen-produced newspapers (including Young D.C.) and the 13-bureau Youth News Service. |
